Fascia Boards & Gutters – How They Work Together

fascia boards

When it comes to replacing your gutters, we always hope it’s a simple process.

And by simple, that means we show up, remove the old rain gutters, cut-to-fit new seamless aluminum gutters, install them, add self-cleaning guards, and like that – you have new gutters!

For the most part, the process above describes what it’s like for most homeowners to replace their gutters.

However, there are those periodic times when not only do the gutters need replacing but so do the boards they’re mounted to – the fascia boards to be specific.

Now if you’re wondering what a “Fascia Board” is and how do you know if it needs to be replaced we got you covered. Today, we will go over the following:

  • What fascia boards are & what do they
  • Why do you need fascia boards for gutters
  • How to replace fascia boards & costs

First, What are Fascia Boards?

You may have heard roofs, siding, shingles, gutters, and windows. But have you heard of fascia boards?

  • Fascia Boards: the longboard that encloses the roofs trusses on the edges of a home below the roof, where the gutters mount to

In the above photo, the fascia boards pictured are wood. However, fascia boards can come in a variety of materials, including:

  1. Wood
  2. PVC
  3. Composite
  4. Vinyl
  5. Wrapped in aluminum

Each has its own set of pros and cons, however, the most commonly replaced fascia boards are wood. Why? Because simply put, wood fascia boards rot quicker than the others when exposed to elements such as overflowing gutters:

In the photo above, over time the rain gutters began to pull away from the home due to improper maintenance. Because of this, water from the roof drained in between the home and gutters, thus penetrating the wooden fascia boards.

Over time, the wood rots, making the gutters pull away even quicker, and sometimes even fall off. This leads to why working fascia boards are important!

The Importance of Fascia Boards

In addition to being the primary source for securing new gutters to your home, fascia boards are essential to be in working order.

When your home is built, the roof trusses hang over the walls of your home. This allows for ventilation to occur within the attic/roof. To cover the ends of the trusses, fascia boards are used. On the underside, ventilated soffit is installed.

Together, all these help keep your roof and home dry and ventilated. The fascia board also happens to be where gutters are mounted to. So, saying the relationship between your home’s fascia boards and your gutters is important would be an understatement.

Without fascia boards, your gutters would have nothing to mount to. However, without gutters (or gutter guards) that are installed correctly/working, your fascia boards run the risk of getting exposed to moisture.

Either way, the two working symbiotically together is vital, which is why whenever we inspect a home prior to installing new gutters, we make sure we are not installing new gutters on bad fascia boards!

Fascia Board Replacement & Costs:

In the event your home is in need of some fascia board replacement, here is the good news – typically it’s just in a few spots… or at least we hope!

What we have found over there years is that sometimes when installing new gutters, some of the old fascia boards need replacement, but not all. And with new gutters, the original fascia boards are protected so long as the new gutters are maintained.

In the event that fascia boards need replacing, here is how much it costs:

Fascia Board Costs:

Here is how much new fascia boards cost when we install them:

  1. It’s $10 per linear foot for new fascia boards
  2. It’s $10 to have those boards wrapped in aluminum (which we always recommend)
  3. Minimum of 8 feet

Using those metrics, if a home needed 20 feet of fascia board replacement, the math would break down to:

  • 20 feet x $10 = $200 for fascia boards, $200 for aluminum wrap, total $400.

While the aluminum wrapping isn’t required (therefore, it would be $200 in that case) it is recommended, however, some homeowners choose to have their fascia boards painted.

In that case, they have the option to just replace the board, then have them painted prior to installing new gutters. However, we recommend aluminum warping and here is why:

  1. The aluminum wrap protects your fascia boards better than paint
  2. With aluminum warp, you can color match and won’t deal with fading
  3. The sharper look and longer durability is always worth it in the long run, especially when adding new gutters after
  4. We also warranty our labor

Fascia Board Replacement

The process to replace fascia boards is pretty simple. First, we inspect the condition of the boards prior to ever installing new gutters. Sometimes they might just need some TLC and pressure washing!

If we notice rotting or areas where the boards need to be replaced, we inform the homeowner of where and how much. At that point we let them know they’re free to get other estimates. However, as a company, we do not place new gutters on inadequate fascia boards.

While we rarely have to replace ALL fascia boards, here are cases where we have to replace and wrap sections depending on the condition. Additionally, we always let homeowners know in advance the cost.

Final Word –

In the event you need new fascia boards, sometimes it can be because they’re simply old, wood (wood warps and rots over time) or because your gutters caused damage over time (gutter guards help prevent this).

A gutter company that knows what they’re doing will always be upfront and transparent about this. Remember, always ask a gutter company these questions before hiring, and ask about fascia boards if you see an issue!
